The Story (by Amy)

Alistair and I took the first week of our vacation this year in Algonquin Park where we initiated our puppy into the joys of canoe camping. The trip that we chose had a very tough day in the middle with lots of portaging which we wisely followed with a rest day. During the rest day (August 23, 2007), we hung about the campsite, enjoyed the hammock, and ate raspberry cobbler. It threatened to rain all day but never did. By evening, the sky had cleared, and we enjoyed a campfire. As I was getting into the tent to straighten out our bedding, Alistair came over, took my hand, and said “Come and have a look at this.” (I must admit that in that moment, the thought flashed through my mind that he might be about to propose.) We walked out onto the rocks next to the water and stood and looked at the stars and the moon for a long while. (At which point I assumed that I'd been wrong about the proposal.) As I turned to get back to return to the tent, I felt a tug on my hand, and when I turned around, Alistair was down on one knee and asked if I would marry him. I said yes instantly.

The Story (by Alistair)

Amy and I took a two week vacation in August last year. The first week was a week long canoing trip through the backwoods of Algonquin followed by a week of rest and relaxation at a cottage. It was a very strenous canoing trip with many portages and long days.

On the 5th day of our trip we took the day off and stayed at our camp-site recovering from a strenuous previous day. The site faced west looking out over a portion of the lake. As the evening set in and the stars started to peak through the light cloud cover I got Amy out of the hammock and down to the shore. We stood there for a long time hand-in-hand, enjoying the silence and the beautiful scenery along the rocky shoreline. The breeze started to come up and Amy decided it was time to get a good campfire going. She turned away but I held on to her hand and when she turned back I was on my knee asking her if she would be mine forever. After a moment, and a deep breath, she quietly said "yes".
