What to do in Ottawa
Here is a list of some of the places in and around Ottawa that Alistair and I like to visit:
Bytowne Theatre - independent and international films shown in a restored theatre.
Byward Market - check out the market stalls, relax on a patio or shop 'til you drop.
Canadian War Museum - the new War Museum is definitely worth a visit. Much more than can be seen in an afternoon.
Gatineau Park - a great place to get away from the city for a walk, bike ride or swim.
Le Nordik Spa - if you need a spot to relax, this is the place for it. We think that the best use of their services would be to enjoy the baths for a couple of hours, have a massage and then go back to the baths for an hour or two.
National Gallery of Canada - an interesting building and the Canadian collection is worth seeing. Several interesting exhibits including Utopia/Distopia: The Photographs of Geoffrey James, Comic Relief and Dots, Pulses and Loops, will be on display in September.
Parliament Hill - take in the view from the top of the Peace Tower, visit with the cats who live in the cattery, or take a tour of the Parliament Buildings.
Steam Train to Wakefield - definitely the slow way to get to Wakefield, but enjoyable.
Upper Canada Village - a fun day trip to see what Ontario was like in the 1860's. The fall fair is taking place September 20th and 21st.
Visit Perth, ON - this beautiful small town outside Ottawa has a great arts community.
Where to eat in Ottawa
Here are some of our favourite places to eat out in Ottawa:- Ahora - (307 Dalhousie Street, 613.562.2081) An inexpensive cafeteria-style Mexican restaurant that offers very good, fresh tasting food.
- Bridgehead - (224 Dalhousie Street, 613.562.9996) One of nine locations in Ottawa. Definitely our favourite coffee shop for either a quick bite at lunch or a leisurely afternoon coffee.
- Domus Cafe - (85 Murray Street, 613.241.6007) This restaurant specializes in excellent regional cuisine.
- Fourth Avenue Wine Bar - (107 Fourth Ave, 613.236.0040) A great place to kick back and have a drink with friends. They have a limited but tasty menu for lunch and dinner. Check out the patio at rear.
- Fuschian Vietnamese - (726 Somerset Street West, 613.230.6815)
- Green Door - (198 Main Street, 613.234.959) A buffet style vegetarian restaurant down the street from our place.
- The Horn of Africa - (364 Rideau Street, 613.789.0025) A great place for a casual Ethiopian meal.
- The Manx - (370 Elgin Street, 613.231.2070) A cozy pub that serves interesting dishes with an international twist as well as a great brunch.
- Oz Cafe - (361 Elgin Street, 613.234.0907) This restaurant is hidden away a bit from the street, but the food makes it worth finding. The atmosphere is intimate and cozy.
- Pure Gelato - (71 William Street, 613.562.4111) THE best gelato in Ottawa.
- Sacred Garden - (1300 Bank Street, 613.733.8424) The best Thai restaurant in Ottawa, and it happens to be vegetarian.
- Shawarma King - (395 Bank Street, 613.233.1282) An Ottawa guilty pleasure. Nothing like garlicky falafel after a night of drinking or a quick bite when you're short on time.
- So Good Restaurant - (717 Somerset Street West, 613.233.0138) Our favourite Chinese restaurant. Not entirely authentic, but very tasty.
Zoé's Lounge (Fairmont Chateau Laurier) - (1 Rideau Street, 613.241.1414) If you're in the mood for a fancy afternoon tea, this is the place for it.
